The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
