At least 64 people died in a law enforcement action targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's history.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. More than 80 suspects were detained.

Violent conflicts erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization responded with gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas close to the city's international airport is seen as the headquarters of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.

State officials said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
